Christ's Ministry in
the Heavenly Sanctuary
There is a sanctuary in heaven, the true
tabernacle which the Lord set up and not man. In it Christ ministers on
our behalf, making available to believers the benefits of His atoning
sacrifice offered once for all on the cross. He was inaugurated as our
great High Priest and began His intercessory ministry at the time of His
ascension. In 1844, at the end of the prophetic period of 2300 days, He
entered the second and last phase of His atoning ministry. It is a work of
investigative judgment which is part of the ultimate disposition of all
sin, typified by the cleansing of the ancient Hebrew sanctuary on the Day
of Atonement. In that typical service the sanctuary was cleansed with the
blood of animal sacrifices, but the heavenly things are purified with the
perfect sacrifice of the blood of Jesus. The investigative judgment
reveals to heavenly intelligences who among the dead are asleep in Christ
and therefore, in Him, are deemed worthy to have part in the first
resurrection. It also makes manifest who among the living are abiding in
Christ, keeping the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus, and in
Him, therefore, are ready for translation into His everlasting kingdom.
This judgment vindicates the justice of God in saving those who believe in
Jesus. It declares that those who have remained loyal to God shall receive
the kingdom. The completion of this ministry of Christ will mark the close
of human probation before the Second Advent.

1 Now the point in what we
are saying is this: we have such a high priest, one who is seated at the
right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven,
2 a minister in the sanctuary and the true tent
which is set up not by man but by the Lord. 3
For every high priest is appointed to offer gifts and sacrifices; hence it
is necessary for this priest also to have something to offer.
4 Now if he were on earth, he
would not be a priest at all, since there are priests who offer gifts
according to the law. 5 They
serve a copy and shadow of the heavenly sanctuary; for when Moses was
about to erect the tent, he was instructed by God, saying, "See that you
make everything according to the pattern which was shown you on the
mountain."
(4)
14 Since then we have a great
high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let
us hold fast our confession. 15
For we have not a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our
weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet
without sin. 16 Let us then
with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive
mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
(9)
11 But when Christ appeared
as a high priest of the good things that have come, then through the
greater and more perfect tent (not made with hands, that is, not of this
creation) 12 he entered once
for all into the Holy Place, taking not the blood of goats and calves but
his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption.
13 For if the sprinkling of
defiled persons with the blood of goats and bulls and with the ashes of a
heifer sanctifies for the purification of the flesh,
14 how much more shall the blood
of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish
to God, purify your conscience from dead works to serve the living God.
15 Therefore he is the mediator
of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the promised
eternal inheritance, since a death has occurred which redeems them from
the transgressions under the first covenant.
16 For where a will is involved, the death of the one who
made it must be established. 17
For a will takes effect only at death, since it is not in force as long as
the one who made it is alive. 18
Hence even the first covenant was not ratified without blood.
19 For when every commandment of
the law had been declared by Moses to all the people, he took the blood of
calves and goats, with water and scarlet wool and hyssop, and sprinkled
both the book itself and all the people, 20
saying, "This is the blood of the covenant which God commanded you."
21 And in the same way he
sprinkled with the blood both the tent and all the vessels used in
worship. 22 Indeed, under the
law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of
blood there is no forgiveness of sins. 23
Thus it was necessary for the copies of the heavenly things to be purified
with these rites, but the heavenly things themselves with better
sacrifices than these. 24 For
Christ has entered, not into a sanctuary made with hands, a copy of the
true one, but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God on
our behalf. 25 Nor was it to
offer himself repeatedly, as the high priest enters the Holy Place yearly
with blood not his own; 26
for then he would have had to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of
the world. But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the
age to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.
27 And just as it is appointed for men to die once,
and after that comes judgment, 28
so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear
a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly
waiting for him.
(10)
19 Therefore, brethren, since
we have confidence to enter the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus,
20 by the new and living way
which he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh,
21 and since we have a great
priest over the house of God, 22
let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our
hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with
pure water.
(1)
3 He reflects the glory of
God and bears the very stamp of his nature, upholding the universe by his
word of power. When he had made purification for sins, he sat down at the
right hand of the Majesty on high
(2)
16 For surely it is not with
angels that he is concerned but with the descendants of Abraham.
17 Therefore he had to be made
like his brethren in every respect, so that he might become a merciful and
faithful high priest in the service of God, to make expiation for the sins
of the people.
Daniel 7:9-27; 8:13, 14; 9:24-27

9
As I looked, thrones were placed and one that was ancient of days took his
seat; his raiment was white as snow, and the hair of his head like pure
wool; his throne was fiery flames, its wheels were burning fire.
10 A stream of fire issued and came forth from before him; a
thousand thousands served him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood
before him; the court sat in judgment, and the books were opened.
11 I looked then because of the sound of the great words which
the horn was speaking. And as I looked, the beast was slain, and its body
destroyed and given over to be burned with fire. 12 As
for the rest of the beasts, their dominion was taken away, but their lives
were prolonged for a season and a time. 13 I saw in the
night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a
son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before
him. 14 And to him was given dominion and glory and
kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his
dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his
kingdom one that shall not be destroyed. 15 "As for me,
Daniel, my spirit within me was anxious and the visions of my head alarmed
me. 16 I approached one of those who stood there and
asked him the truth concerning all this. So he told me, and made known to
me the interpretation of the things. 17 'These four
great beasts are four kings who shall arise out of the earth. 18
But the saints of the Most High shall receive the kingdom, and possess the
kingdom for ever, for ever and ever.' 19 "Then I desired
to know the truth concerning the fourth beast, which was different from
all the rest, exceedingly terrible, with its teeth of iron and claws of
bronze; and which devoured and broke in pieces, and stamped the residue
with its feet; 20 and concerning the ten horns that were
on its head, and the other horn which came up and before which three of
them fell, the horn which had eyes and a mouth that spoke great things,
and which seemed greater than its fellows. 21 As I
looked, this horn made war with the saints, and prevailed over them,
22 until the Ancient of Days came, and judgment was given
for the saints of the Most High, and the time came when the saints
received the kingdom. 23 "Thus he said: 'As for the
fourth beast, there shall be a fourth kingdom on earth, which shall be
different from all the kingdoms, and it shall devour the whole earth, and
trample it down, and break it to pieces. 24 As for the
ten horns, out of this kingdom ten kings shall arise, and another shall
arise after them; he shall be different from the former ones, and shall
put down three kings. 25 He shall speak words against
the Most High, and shall wear out the saints of the Most High, and shall
think to change the times and the law; and they shall be given into his
hand for a time, two times, and half a time. 26 But the
court shall sit in judgment, and his dominion shall be taken away, to be
consumed and destroyed to the end. 27 And the kingdom
and the dominion and the greatness of the kingdoms under the whole heaven
shall be given to the people of the saints of the Most High; their kingdom
shall be an everlasting kingdom, and all dominions shall serve and obey
them.'
(8)
13
Then I heard a holy one speaking; and another holy one said to the one
that spoke, "For how long is the vision concerning the continual burnt
offering, the transgression that makes desolate, and the giving over of
the sanctuary and host to be trampled under foot?" 14
And he said to him, "For two thousand and three hundred evenings and
mornings; then the sanctuary shall be restored to its rightful state."
(9)
24
"Seventy weeks of years are decreed concerning your people and your holy
city, to finish the transgression, to put an end to sin, and to atone for
iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal both vision and
prophet, and to anoint a most holy place. 25 Know
therefore and understand that from the going forth of the word to restore
and build Jerusalem to the coming of an anointed one, a prince, there
shall be seven weeks. Then for sixty-two weeks it shall be built again
with squares and moat, but in a troubled time. 26 And
after the sixty-two weeks, an anointed one shall be cut off, and shall
have nothing; and the people of the prince who is to come shall destroy
the city and the sanctuary. Its end shall come with a flood, and to the
end there shall be war; desolations are decreed. 27 And
he shall make a strong covenant with many for one week; and for half of
the week he shall cause sacrifice and offering to cease; and upon the wing
of abominations shall come one who makes desolate, until the decreed end
is poured out on the desolator."
Numbers 14:34
34
According to the number of the days in which you spied out the land, forty
days, for every day a year, you shall bear your iniquity, forty years, and
you shall know my displeasure.'
Ezekiel 4:6
6
And when you have completed these, you shall lie down a second time, but
on your right side, and bear the punishment of the house of Judah; forty
days I assign you, a day for each year.
Leviticus 16
1
The LORD spoke to Moses, after the death of the two sons of Aaron, when
they drew near before the LORD and died; 2
and the LORD said to Moses, "Tell Aaron your brother not to come at all
times into the holy place within the veil, before the mercy seat which is
upon the ark, lest he die; for I will appear in the cloud upon the mercy
seat. 3 But thus shall Aaron
come into the holy place: with a young bull for a sin offering and a ram
for a burnt offering. 4 He
shall put on the holy linen coat, and shall have the linen breeches on his
body, be girded with the linen girdle, and wear the linen turban; these
are the holy garments. He shall bathe his body in water, and then put them
on. 5 And he shall take from
the congregation of the people of Israel two male goats for a sin
offering, and one ram for a burnt offering. 6
"And Aaron shall offer the bull as a sin offering for himself, and shall
make atonement for himself and for his house.
7 Then he shall take the two goats, and set them before
the LORD at the door of the tent of meeting; 8
and Aaron shall cast lots upon the two goats, one lot for the LORD and the
other lot for Aza'zel. 9 And
Aaron shall present the goat on which the lot fell for the LORD, and offer
it as a sin offering; 10 but
the goat on which the lot fell for Aza'zel shall be presented alive before
the LORD to make atonement over it, that it may be sent away into the
wilderness to Aza'zel. 11
"Aaron shall present the bull as a sin offering for himself, and shall
make atonement for himself and for his house; he shall kill the bull as a
sin offering for himself. 12
And he shall take a censer full of coals of fire from the altar before the
LORD, and two handfuls of sweet incense beaten small; and he shall bring
it within the veil 13 and put
the incense on the fire before the LORD, that the cloud of the incense may
cover the mercy seat which is upon the testimony, lest he die;
14 and he shall take some of the
blood of the bull, and sprinkle it with his finger on the front of the
mercy seat, and before the mercy seat he shall sprinkle the blood with his
finger seven times. 15 "Then
he shall kill the goat of the sin offering which is for the people, and
bring its blood within the veil, and do with its blood as he did with the
blood of the bull, sprinkling it upon the mercy seat and before the mercy
seat; 16 thus he shall make
atonement for the holy place, because of the uncleannesses of the people
of Israel, and because of their transgressions, all their sins; and so he
shall do for the tent of meeting, which abides with them in the midst of
their uncleannesses. 17 There
shall be no man in the tent of meeting when he enters to make atonement in
the holy place until he comes out and has made atonement for himself and
for his house and for all the assembly of Israel.
18 Then he shall go out to the altar which is before
the LORD and make atonement for it, and shall take some of the blood of
the bull and of the blood of the goat, and put it on the horns of the
altar round about. 19 And he
shall sprinkle some of the blood upon it with his finger seven times, and
cleanse it and hallow it from the uncleannesses of the people of Israel.
20 "And when he has made an
end of atoning for the holy place and the tent of meeting and the altar,
he shall present the live goat; 21
and Aaron shall lay both his hands upon the head of the live goat, and
confess over him all the iniquities of the people of Israel, and all their
transgressions, all their sins; and he shall put them upon the head of the
goat, and send him away into the wilderness by the hand of a man who is in
readiness. 22 The goat shall
bear all their iniquities upon him to a solitary land; and he shall let
the goat go in the wilderness. 23
"Then Aaron shall come into the tent of meeting, and shall put off the
linen garments which he put on when he went into the holy place, and shall
leave them there; 24 and he
shall bathe his body in water in a holy place, and put on his garments,
and come forth, and offer his burnt offering and the burnt offering of the
people, and make atonement for himself and for the people.
25 And the fat of the sin
offering he shall burn upon the altar. 26
And he who lets the goat go to Aza'zel shall wash his clothes and bathe
his body in water, and afterward he may come into the camp.
27 And the bull for the sin
offering and the goat for the sin offering, whose blood was brought in to
make atonement in the holy place, shall be carried forth outside the camp;
their skin and their flesh and their dung shall be burned with fire.
28 And he who burns them shall
wash his clothes and bathe his body in water, and afterward he may come
into the camp. 29 "And it
shall be a statute to you for ever that in the seventh month, on the tenth
day of the month, you shall afflict yourselves, and shall do no work,
either the native or the stranger who sojourns among you;
30 for on this day shall
atonement be made for you, to cleanse you; from all your sins you shall be
clean before the LORD. 31 It
is a Sabbath of solemn rest to you, and you shall afflict yourselves; it
is a statute for ever. 32 And
the priest who is anointed and consecrated as priest in his father's place
shall make atonement, wearing the holy linen garments;
33 he shall make atonement for
the sanctuary, and he shall make atonement for the tent of meeting and for
the altar, and he shall make atonement for the priests and for all the
people of the assembly. 34
And this shall be an everlasting statute for you, that atonement may be
made for the people of Israel once in the year because of all their sins."
And Moses did as the LORD commanded him.
Revelation 14:6, 7; 20:12; 14:12;
22:12
(14)
6
Then I saw another angel flying in midheaven, with an eternal gospel to
proclaim to those who dwell on earth, to every nation and tribe and tongue
and people; 7 and he said with a loud voice, "Fear God
and give him glory, for the hour of his judgment has come; and worship him
who made heaven and earth, the sea and the fountains of water."
(20)
12
And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books
were opened. Also another book was opened, which is the book of life. And
the dead were judged by what was written in the books, by what they had
done.

Here is a call for the endurance of the saints, those who keep the
commandments of God and the faith of Jesus.

"Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense, to repay every one for
what he has done.
