Spiritual Gifts and
Ministries
God bestows upon all members of His church in
every age spiritual gifts which each member is to employ in loving
ministry for the common good of the church and of humanity. Given by the
agency of the Holy Spirit, who apportions to each member as He wills, the
gifts provide all abilities and ministries needed by the church to fulfill
its divinely ordained functions. According to the Scriptures, these gifts
include such ministries as faith, healing, prophecy, proclamation,
teaching, administration, reconciliation, compassion, and self-sacrificing
service and charity for the help and encouragement of people. Some members
are called of God and endowed by the Spirit for functions recognized by
the church in pastoral, evangelistic, apostolic, and teaching ministries
particularly needed to equip the members for service, to build up the
church to spiritual maturity, and to foster unity of the faith and
knowledge of God. When members employ these spiritual gifts as faithful
stewards of God's varied grace, the church is protected from the
destructive influence of false doctrine, grows with a growth that is from
God, and is built up in faith and love.
Romans 12:4-8
4
For as in one body we have many members, and all the members do not have
the same function, 5 so we,
though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of
another. 6 Having gifts that
differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy,
in proportion to our faith; 7
if service, in our serving; he who teaches, in his teaching;
8 he who exhorts, in his
exhortation; he who contributes, in liberality; he who gives aid, with
zeal; he who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.

to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the
one Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another
prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to
another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of
tongues. 11 All these are inspired by one and the same Spirit,
who apportions to each one individually as he wills.
27
Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. 28
And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third
teachers, then workers of miracles, then healers, helpers, administrators,
speakers in various kinds of tongues.
Ephesians 4:8, 11-16
8
Therefore it is said, "When he ascended on high he led a host of captives,
and he gave gifts to men."
11
And his gifts were that some should be apostles, some prophets, some
evangelists, some pastors and teachers, 12
to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of
Christ, 13 until we all attain to
the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to mature
manhood, to the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ;
14 so that we may no longer be
children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine,
by the cunning of men, by their craftiness in deceitful wiles.
15 Rather, speaking the truth in
love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into
Christ, 16 from whom the whole body,
joined and knit together by every joint with which it is supplied, when
each part is working properly, makes bodily growth and upbuilds itself in
love.
Acts 6:1-7
1
Now in these days when the disciples were increasing in number, the
Hellenists murmured against the Hebrews because their widows were
neglected in the daily distribution. 2
And the twelve summoned the body of the disciples and said, "It is not
right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables.
3 Therefore, brethren, pick out from
among you seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom
we may appoint to this duty. 4 But
we will devote ourselves to prayer and to the ministry of the word."
5 And what they said pleased the
whole multitude, and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the
Holy Spirit, and Philip, and Proch'orus, and Nica'nor, and Ti'mon, and
Par'menas, and Nicola'us, a proselyte of Antioch.
6 These they set before the apostles, and they prayed
and laid their hands upon them. 7
And the word of God increased; and the number of the disciples multiplied
greatly in Jerusalem, and a great many of the priests were obedient to the
faith.

Timothy 3:1-13
1
The saying is sure: If any one aspires to the office of bishop, he desires
a noble task. 2 Now a bishop must be above reproach, the
husband of one wife, temperate, sensible, dignified, hospitable, an apt
teacher, 3 no drunkard, not violent but gentle, not
quarrelsome, and no lover of money. 4 He must manage his own
household well, keeping his children submissive and respectful in every
way; 5 for if a man does not know how to manage his own
household, how can he care for God's church? 6 He must not be a
recent convert, or he may be puffed up with conceit and fall into the
condemnation of the devil; 7 moreover he must be well thought
of by outsiders, or he may fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.
8 Deacons likewise must be serious, not double-tongued, not
addicted to much wine, not greedy for gain; 9 they must hold
the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. 10 And let
them also be tested first; then if they prove themselves blameless let
them serve as deacons. 11 The women likewise must be serious,
no slanderers, but temperate, faithful in all things. 12 Let
deacons be the husband of one wife, and let them manage their children and
their households well; 13 for those who serve well as deacons
gain a good standing for themselves and also great confidence in the faith
which is in Christ Jesus.

Peter 4:10, 11
10
As each has received a gift, employ it for one another, as good stewards
of God's varied grace: 11 whoever speaks, as one who utters
oracles of God; whoever renders service, as one who renders it by the
strength which God supplies; in order that in everything God may be
glorified through Jesus Christ. To him belong glory and dominion for ever
and ever. Amen.
